AU Background: Mami comes from an alternate universe where she was on better terms with Homura, to the point that she heeded her warning about Charlotte and didn't tie her up in order to stop her from coming after her. Homura came to finish Charlotte off, as normal, but due to an anomaly in the timeline, Mami was thought to have died. In reality, she was badly wounded, and was forced to recuperate somewhere other than her own home. Thus, she wasn't at home the next day when Madoka visited.
Mami was off battling another witch on the night Madoka stumbled into Elly's barrier, and Sayaka still had to contract in order to save her. However, when Kyoko and Sayaka clashed, Mami appeared to stop the fight between them. In the events that followed, she reconciled with Kyoko and mentored Sayaka. However, she couldn't get them to back down completely, and was there when they discovered the first secret of the Soul Gems - they literally contained the girls' souls. She became somewhat demoralised after that, but managed to recover from the shock.
At some point before Walpurgis Night arrived, they encountered another magical girl from a neighbouring town who was close to despair, and watched in horror as she transformed into a Witch in front of them - revealing the final secret of the Soul Gems and the true purpose of a magical girl. Kyuubey explained to them that it was to stave off the eventual death of the universe, as human emotion proved to be an effective power source. Mami took this surprisingly well (another anomaly, considering how emotionally fragile she is), looking on such a thing positively and determined to make the most of her power. If Witches were once magical girls, then killing Witches would also be ending the original girl's torment. Giving up hope would only turn them into Witches, after all.
She, Sayaka, Kyoko and Homura survive, and Walpurgis Night is defeated with no casualties among the four magical girls or civilians in Mitakihara. Madoka remains with her family, and Mami continues to hunt Witches and inform potential magical girls of the burden that comes with their wish, finally at peace; she is no longer alone.
Personality: Mami is, first and foremost, someone who cares deeply about others. She has a motherly instinct, and is drawn to people who may need her services in one way or another; she expects no real reward for taking care of people, as she still feels guilty for only thinking of herself and not having enough time to think about the wish that made her a Puella Magi. She is normally cautious and prudent in everything she does, and it is a rare circumstance that will have her charge in recklessly - she is very aware of the fact that she acts independently, and any mistakes could result in her death. Being a magical girl is something she takes extremely seriously, and two years of being alone have made her prone to considering her options and more likely to keep her head in dangerous situations.
However, being lonely, she tends to latch onto people who show her any sort of friendship beyond casual acquaintance - although this lessened when she was revived in the new world, she still has issues dealing with her loneliness. Although she admits that being a magical girl has made her lonely and afraid, she is still happy that other people are willing to fight alongside her and take on that burden themselves.
She is good at acting maturely and calmly, and acting as if she is in control of the situation; this was mostly a facade, however, as she was hiding how emotionally frail she was underneath. When she became reckless and overconfident in her attempt to live up to the facade she projected, she was killed because she couldn't adapt fast enough to change. When she finds out the true purpose of magical girls, this is less of a problem with her (although she still has significant issues with believing that if she acts as if she is all right, she will be), as she has more knowledge of what will eventually happen and the origins of Witches.
Mami eventually came to terms with the reality that mistakes could mean death, and that her life as a magical girl could end abruptly at any time while fighting Witches. Her contracted job became her life, and she gave up the last shreds of normal connection to devote herself to hunting Witches. Despite this, she continued to fight, wanting to save others and keep them from harm whatever the cost to herself, hiding her terrible loneliness behind a facade.
Abilities: She can transform into a magical girl! As part of this package, she gets supernatural strength and durability, with her weak point compressed into a soul gem (the hairpin on her hair). She can also summon unlimited amounts of rifles (which can only shoot once each), as well as a huge one for her final attack (Tiro Finale), as well as bind people up with ribbons.
She's also basically a meat puppet controlled by a soul in a gem, so. If her Soul Gem darkens completely, she turns into a Witch (Candeloro) and hides herself in a barrier.
Sample Entry:
She feels sick to her stomach.
She's not really thinking about what she's doing; not right now. Her mind is in a completely different place, and it's only autopilot that stops her from spilling hot tea everywhere.
Nevertheless, as soon as she sets the cup down, her hands are shaking. They were trembling, before, but now she can hardly pick anything up.
She's always been...not naive, but trusting. Kyuubey could hardly lead them wrong; after all, he knew what he was doing, and it was a dangerous job. But looking back on it, he'd showed up at that accident, not at any other time.
Kyoko's wish had ended in disaster (and Kyoko had abandoned her - although, looking back on that, she didn't hold any grudges. She understood, although it hurt. She had always been good at understanding people). Sayaka and Kyoko had clashed, before her intervention; so had she and Homura, to an extent, although the other girl had saved her life.
The purpose of a magical girl is to fight Witches, but...
It was...convenient, for Kyuubey. Kyoko had been desperate, and Sayaka had wanted to heal the hand of the boy she was in love with. Now that she'd grown to know Homura better, the other girl had informed her that Madoka had tried to contract before, in the interest of her friends rather than herself.
And, of course, she had contracted in order to save her own life.
They were all desperate situations, in one way or another. Weren't they?
...a magical girl, in time, becomes a Witch.
"Mami."
She looked up, and met a pair of red eyes. Still with that same, neutral expression. Something in her mind fumed at that coolness, that neutrality, as Kyuubey sat on the table, swishing his tail back and forth.
"Kyuubey." She nods, barely. More of an acknowledgement, but she's in no mood to be polite to him, of all people.
He has some nerve coming here. No wonder Homura was hunting him.
It's frankly the first real thought, with any sort of animosity, that she's had towards Kyuubey. He was her friend, a companion that warded off loneliness. But when the truth had been revealed, he'd...
Shown no emotion. Even a creature from another world should show emotion, shouldn't it?
"Not so. The phenomena known as 'emotion' is something that is regarded as a mental illness among our species." He tilts his head, calm as ever. "Why are you so upset? You never asked for that information, so I never gave it to you. I would have told you, if you had said you wanted to know."
"Nobody knew the true purpose of magical girls, when they contracted. Just because we didn't ask, it doesn't mean you shouldn't have told us..."
Her hands have stopped shaking enough so she can drink, and she does so. The tea scalds her mouth, but she doesn't feel it. She feels numb.
Does he really not understand what not knowing these things means to us? How important it is, to know what we're getting into before we contract?
"We don't know what it means to deceive. We only provide basic information at the start, because those are the most important things."
"You do know what it is."
The words tumble out of her, sharp and almost angry, almost bitter. She wouldn't have encouraged them as much, if she'd known. She'd gotten Madoka and Sayaka into this, too. She would take the blame as well, if she was indeed blamed.
But Kyuubey had fooled them, even so.
"You...really don't understand, do you...? What it means to us, to be like this..."
"Why should we need to understand? After all, it's to prevent the death of the universe, and gather energy. It's like the relationships between humans and cattle - but nicer. At least we treat you as the sentient beings you are, and give you choices."
"You gave me a choice when I was dying. When I couldn't think properly--! How is that being fair?"
"It's a second chance, isn't it? I thought you would be glad, Mami."
It's a point that hits hard. She would rather have been a magical girl, than die. That's true. But...
"Kyoko? What's the matter? You're not using your normal attacks any more..."
...drastic consequences had sprung from making such wishes.
"I am glad to be alive. But just because my circumstances were like that, it doesn't mean you should treat everyone like that."
